Back in February, The Knot published their annual Real Weddings Study for 2026. It’s a fantastic read with many insights into how weddings changed last year and how they might change this year according to the trends. Here’s what stood out to me!

Guest experience is top priority

If there’s anything to take away from this study, it’s that couples prioritize the experience of their guests over everything else! Last year, this looked like having smaller, intimate ceremonies or creating one-of-a-kind experiences… events that fostered connection and created treasured memories for guests. This is connected to topics discussed farther into the study, like budgets and vendors.

Trending:

  • Semi-formal and relaxed for both ceremonies and receptions

  • Opportunities to mix and mingle

  • Special experiences for a smaller guest list

Keeping things authentic and unique

There was an emphasis on authenticity and personalization for 90% of engaged couples! According to The Knot’s study, making the wedding feel true to the couple ranked as the third biggest concern, just behind guest experience (#1) and budget (#2). So how do you take the traditional ceremony and make it your own? In the design space, I’ve seen a lot of couples get monograms designed and have some unified branding across save the dates, invitations, decorations, and favors. That alone can all go a long way in making a wedding–or any event–feel personal!

The study also reports that couples are putting a twist on certain wedding traditions. A majority chose to write their own vows instead of using standard pre-written ones, and some traditions (bye-bye garter toss) are left out altogether if they don’t fit the couple's vibe. The first dance is still popular though!

Trending:

  • Editorial style photography (check out this great article to see what I mean) Another great example here.

  • Creating “content moments”

  • Remixing old traditions

Themes on theme

I love a good theme, and a third of married couples in 2025 apparently agree! 33% of couples on The Knot had a wedding with some theme in mind. Popular themes focused on nature, seasonal florals, and rustic chic. Those themes explain the color trends in the study such as pastels and neutrals, emphasis on blues and greens. Very meadowcore!

Trending:

  • Soft hues and neutral color palettes

  • Popular colors are light green, light blue, and dark green

  • Elongated stem flower bouquets

  • Meadowcore and pearlcore aesthetics

Planning on and for the gram

More and more couples are depending on social media platforms like Pinterest, Instagram and TikTok for visual inspiration during wedding planning. Likewise, planning focuses on creating moments that can later be shared to these same platforms, according to The Knot. Candid flash photography being favored over composed, polished photography makes a lot of sense with this. With a big priority being guest experience, creating “content moments” makes a lot of sense. Couples want guests to enjoy and post about their experiences at the wedding, might as well make it visually interesting, right?

Final thoughts

There are many more trends in the study I didn’t touch on, like vendor cost breakdown, the proposal, ring shopping, etc. I highly recommend you give the study a read yourself. Personally, I’m looking forward to the rise in cupcakes as an alternative dessert.

Cheers!
